3.16.18 Yea! Baby chickens! We bought 7 new chickens today-March 16,2018. Do we have a chicken coop you might ask? No! but it is now on our to Do List! We are the proud parents of 4 Gold Sex link chicks and 3 Sex link Isa Brown.
4.2.18 Chicken update. We added 4 Sapphire Gems to our little flock. They are suppose to lay blue eggs. I just looked them up and the sad news is that they lay brown eggs. Now I wish I had looked harder for Araucana Chickens. Sigh, Perhaps next year. I just called IFA and they had 3 white Crested Black Polish Chicks left. After digging out my credit card they now belong to us. Our flock just jumped from 11 to 14. I am pretty sure I only wanted 5 or 6, but fate has a way of stepping in and taking over. :) I think that the new ones lay white egs, but smaller. Here is what I found on them: Polish are a very special and unique breed of chicken with their huge bouffant crest of feathers and v-shaped comb. They are tame and as such make good pets, but their behavior can be a bit wacky since their crest limits their vision! When in a flock with more aggressive breeds, Polish will tend to be on the low end of the pecking order. Polish lay smallish white eggs, and production depends on the individual, we've found--some lay well and some very poorly. In short, Polish are sweet, beautiful exhibition birds and can be good layers in the backyard flock, but they're not reliable. https://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Day-Old-Baby-Chicks/Day-Old-Chicks-White-Crested-Black-Polish-Bantam-p268.aspx
